Turning Phone Orders into Seamless Flower Gifting
Turning Phone Orders into Seamless Flower Gifting
A UX case study on designing a flower ordering app for overwhelmed, last-minute buyers.
đ§ The Problem
The flower shop has a loyal customer base, but no digital presence. Orders were placed entirely over the phone, which created high frictionâespecially for new customers who didnât know what to ask for or how to describe what they wanted.
âI want to get flowers for Motherâs Day, but I donât even know where to start. I donât have time to call and figure it out.â â User interview, Male, 30s
The existing system lacked:
-Convenience and speed (especially for last-minute shoppers)
-A visual reference of bouquet options
-A guided experience for people with no flower knowledge
đ¤ The Persona
James, 30, works long hours. Itâs the evening before Mother's Day, and he just remembered he needs to order flowers. Heâs too tired to research floral terms, and calling the shop feels like a hassle.Â
He wants something quick, thoughtful, and easyâwith no guesswork.
đŻ Goal
Design a mobile app from scratch that makes flower ordering:
â
Fast
â
Intuitive
â
Beginner-friendly
â
Emotionally satisfying
Market Context
Local competitors had simple websites, but still required users to browse endless bouquets or call in custom requests. There was a clear opportunity to stand out with personalization and ease.
User Interviews
I spoke with 5 different customers (25â40), most of whom admitted:
Key Insight
People arenât looking for âthe perfect flower.â Theyâre looking for confidence that their gift will be meaningful and appropriate.
A guided mobile app that eliminates decision fatigue. Users are taken through a quick, friendly questionnaire to generate a personalized bouquet recommendationâno jargon, no overwhelm.
Key Features
-guided quiz: choosing base flower, color palette, budget, pick up time, budget,
-inbox - messaging system with the floristÂ
-One-tap order & payment integration
-Order Status UpdateÂ
Information Architecture
I reimagined a seamless shopping experience for people who doesn't know where to begin their flower bouquet journey. With a guided questionnaire, it assists not only the customers to flesh out their needs in an organized matter but also for the florists to better understand the customer's vision.Â
Home â Order Custom Bouquetâ Guided Questions to spark the conversation with the floristâ Confirm Order
â
Reducing of order time from ~10 minutes to <2 minutes
â
Users feeling more confident and less overwhelmed
â
Designing a scalable system to support future occasions (Valentineâs Day, birthdays, etc.)
-Add seasonal âExpress Picksâ for high-demand holidays
-Integrate push notifications for last-minute reminders
-Referral Program/Social Sharing
-Recipient Profiles (Mom likes pastels, Partner loves sunflowers, etc.) to personalize faster next time
-âSurprise Meâ Mode - A fully randomized option for spontaneous usersâgreat for those who just want something nice and fast with minimal input. (âTrust our florists to craft something beautiful within your budget.â)
-AI-Powered Flower Suggestions (Integrate a smart recommendation engine that learns from user behavior (past orders, preferred palettes, occasions) to pre-fill answers or suggest new bouquet styles.)
e.g., âBased on your past choices, we think youâll love this soft peach bouquet for Mom.â
-Occasion Reminders & Auto-Scheduling
-Flower meaning description page
-Creating an app/platform as the florists
This project wasnât just a UI challengeâit was a business transformation. I helped bring a local flower shop into the digital age by creating a product rooted in user empathy and simplicity.Â
The result? A delightful, modern tool that makes gifting flowers feel effortlessâeven for first-timers.
